Automatic Gates Questions

Every question we get asked about automatic gates, answered straight.

Questions

How It Works

  • Do I need grid power at the gate post?

Grid power is the simplest option, but a solar panel with battery backup works where running conduit to the post is impractical. Tell us whether you have power at the post and the installer will quote accordingly.

  • Can a loop detector work on a steep foothills driveway?

Yes, but the loop must be cut into a stable concrete or asphalt surface. On gravel or heavily cracked pavement, a keypad or fob reader is more reliable. The installer will assess the surface before specifying a loop.

  • Will the gate still open during a power outage?

A battery-backed operator keeps the gate cycling through a grid outage. Most LiftMaster operators include a battery backup option. Solar operators with a battery bank work the same way.

  • Does Boulder require a permit for an automatic gate?

Boulder typically requires a permit for new gate structures and electrical work at the post. The installer handles the permit application and schedules the inspection, you do not need to manage that process yourself.

  • How do delivery drivers open the gate if they do not have a fob?

A keypad with a one-time or temporary code covers delivery drivers. A video intercom lets you release the gate remotely from your phone. Loop detectors on the exit side open the gate automatically as a vehicle approaches from inside.
