The stacked panels occupy roughly half the opening span. For a 12-foot gate, each folded leaf is about 3 feet wide. You need that 3-foot depth clear of any wall, post, or fence on the latch side. The installer measures this at the site survey before ordering panels.

A moderate slope is manageable, but the hinge geometry changes with grade. The installer adjusts the pivot height and operator arm angle to compensate. A steep cross-slope can rule out a bi-fold entirely, the site survey will confirm whether the grade is within tolerance.

Without safety edges, the folding panels can trap a person or vehicle between them mid-cycle. UL 325 requires entrapment protection on all automated gates. Skipping it creates a liability exposure and may void your homeowner’s insurance if an incident occurs.

The center hinge on a bi-fold carries the full panel weight in a cantilevered position on every open and close cycle. Swing gate hinges share load across a fixed post. Undersized center hinges fatigue and crack within a year or two of regular use.

A solar panel with battery backup is a workable option for bi-folding gates with aluminum panels, which are lighter than steel. The installer sizes the battery to your cycle frequency and sun exposure. Grid power is more consistent for high-traffic commercial entrances.

Freeze-thaw cycles force moisture into hinge pins and pivot bearings. If those components are mild steel, they corrode and seize within a few winters. Stainless or hot-dip galvanized hardware at every pivot point is the standard spec for this climate.
